Both wives and husbands can get alimony or spousal support under the right circumstances. The primary factors to determine availability are who is the supporting spouse and who is the dependent spouse. The supporting spouse is the spouse who earns more money and would have excess income beyond his or her expenses. The dependent spouse is the spouse who does not have sufficient funds to cover his or her reasonable needs and expenses. In many families neither spouse is able to be a supporting spouse. Therefore, if there is no supporting spouse, spousal support is not warranted. Likewise, if neither spouse is dependent on the other, then spousal support is not warranted.
