JOINING JANUARY 2027
Honorable Louis A. Trosch, Jr.
Child Welfare Law Specialist, Certified by the National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC) (July 2010)
My father taught me a simple principle: leave the world a better place than you found it. That lesson shaped my decision to become a lawyer and has guided me throughout my career, whether serving as a public defender, advocating for children and families, practicing law at Conrad Trosch & Kemmy, or spending nearly twenty-eight years on the bench.
Returning to Conrad Trosch & Kemmy feels like coming home. I am excited to work alongside my brothers, Bill and Eric, and my son, Lou III, and especially grateful for the opportunity to build CTK’s mediation and arbitration practice with my wife, Cathie. Few people are fortunate enough to begin a new chapter surrounded by family.
As a judge, I had the privilege of presiding over thousands of cases involving domestic disputes, business litigation, construction disputes, personal injury claims, criminal matters and complex civil litigation. Those experiences taught me that most people want the same thing from the legal system: a fair hearing, practical solutions and to be treated with respect. They also uniquely prepared me to serve as a mediator and arbitrator by allowing me to evaluate disputes from all sides.
A primary focus of my practice at CTK will be mediation and arbitration. After nearly three decades helping parties resolve difficult disputes, facilitating settlement discussions and making tough decisions from the bench, I bring a practical and impartial perspective to the process. My goal is to help lawyers and their clients reach fair, efficient resolutions, while avoiding the expense, uncertainty and stress that litigation often brings.
Collaboration has always been one of my passions. In fact, early in my judicial career, I helped establish North Carolina’s first dependency mediation program, an effort that was codified by statute and became a model for courts across the state. Throughout my career, I have believed that bringing people together to solve problems often produces better outcomes than simply fighting about them.
As I begin this next chapter, I look forward to serving our clients, our community and the profession that has given me so much. It is another opportunity to continue trying to leave the world a little better than I found it.
